Select mobile app development approach that fits your needs best

One of the various approaches can be utilized to create a mobile application. The distinctions between them incorporate their abilities, execution, and the intricacy of the development process. Discover which one fits your business best.
What is it?
Web apps designed to work like mobile apps, accessible through browsers without installation.
Pros
No installation required | Easily shared via a URL link or placed in shops after customization.

Versatility | One app works across platforms (Android and iOS).
Updates | Releasing new versions is straightforward. They do not require the full process necessary for in-store apps.

Low development & maintenance costs | PWA apps can be cheaper to develop as it is technically similar to maintaining web apps.
Cons
Limited native features | The ability to access some of the device's native features may be limited and vary depending on the platform.

Performance | PWA applications have performance similar to web applications - may be slower in some use cases compared to native applications.
What is it?
Apps developed in web technologies "wrapped" in a native application, allowing access to the native device functions.

e.g. Capacitor, Cordova
Pros
Versatility | The source code is cross-platform, including the web version.

Lower cost | Typically lower cost and faster development time compared to native and cross-platform apps, due to the ability to use web technologies.

Access to native features | Enable all the native features of the device via native plug-ins.
Cons
Performance | Hybrid apps have performance similar to web apps - in some apps, they may be slower compared to native apps.

Necessity to publish to the stores | Dependency management and updating via stores required - optional to update via OTA model, i.e. not requiring going through the stores.
What is it?
An approach enabling a single source code usage to build native apps for multiple platforms simultaneously.

e.g. React Native
Pros
One app for two systems | The source code of the app is shared between Android and iOS, but with the possibility of adding native modules and differences for each platform if necessary.

Performance | Better performance compared to traditional hybrid apps, similar to native apps.

UI/UX of native applications | In cross-platform applications, by using native components, it is easier to get the feel of a true native application.
Cons
Slower development | Difficult testing or the need for cumbersome management of native dependencies translates into a worse Developer Experience and, as a result, lower development speed than in a hybrid approach.

The need to publish to the shop | Most updates must be done via the shop. OTA is possible but difficult.
What is it?
Apps developed specifically & separately for each platform using languages and tools dedicated to these platforms.

e.g. Objective-C or Swift for iOS, Java or Kotlin for Android.
Pros
Performance | Highest efficiency of all approaches.

Optimization | Ability to optimize precisely for a specific platform. Creating two separate applications enables completely different solutions for each platform independently of each other.
Cons
Cost | Significantly higher development and maintenance cost as it requires the development of separate applications for each platform.

Separated teams & management difficulties | Native apps are developed by different teams. Their communication and coordination of activities can become difficult. Separate source codes for each platform mean each functionality has to be implemented twice (separately per platform).
